I have also seen a lot of car break-ins along the Embarcadero during ball games. On Spear St., my friend once caught the thief breaking into her car and he claimed he was helping to make sure not was taken. It was too much of a pain to file a police report - they should make it easier.
The roof of my convertible / cabrio was slashed and my car broekn into on Spear & Harrison- You can see broken glass & broken windows daily in the neighborhood- The city has no problems funding their meter services and ticketing cars in that area so why the slack in security?
I used to visit 365 main all the time for work at different hours of the day/night. I walk by harrison between main and fremont and I see broken glass all the time. The most recent one I saw was on 1st between folsom and harrison. The car was broken into and all the belongings were pulled out of the car and into the street. My coworker's car was broken into right in front of 365 main where they recently added the bright street lights. I moved into One Rincon Hill and I don't even feel safe to tell my friends/family to part around here while they visit. This has got to be fixed.
Just saw a someone trying to break into a car on Harrison between Spear and Main. The person was African-American, muscular, bald clean-shaven head, 6' tall, wearing a swear with vertical multi-color strips. He hopped into a 4-door American-made, tan-color car when he saw us coming.
Car break-ins in all parts of the city are bad. I mean how many times have you been walking down the street and see a bunch of broken glass on the sidewalk and sometimes you see an empty backpack or purse or even a shopping bag 15 feet away.
This happened to our family 3 times in one year. At one point my wife went to lick up our kids from school and was gone 20 minutes and came back to find her rear side window bashed and a bag of school supplies a few feet away. Tossed all over. We now keep all bags and such out of view but that doesn't always deter folks and some people need to keep stuff in their car for a short visit to a store or school.
My car was broken into in the middle of the day at a restaurant parking lot. The jerk smashed in the passenger window and made off with a winners bag on the front seat. They managed to get away with a couple of clothing items but that's it. I'm sure it was enough to get there next hit of heroin. I have learned from my mistake and I now leave nothing and I mean nothing in the car. Not even a nickel on the consel. My advice is not to leave anything in your car and this will deter them enough to move on to bigger and better things. http://edmontonlites.com
Just saw 2 men break into a car in front of the Gap offices on Harrison. One guy smashed the car window while the other guy was waiting in their own car (white VW Jetta). After breaking into the car, they drove off. This is the second time, I have seen this type of operation - usually the get away car is near-by and has someone waiting in it.
Recent break ins, on 6/23/2012. Happened between the hours of 10:00pm - 1:00am. This happened on Fremont St. (cross streets were Folson And Harrison). I parked my car at around 9:30 pm on Fremont St. and when I came back, my car was one of the 6 cars that was vandalized and got broken into by these low life suckers. This has got to stop. They smashed my passenger side front window, stole my entire pioneer dvd/navi sound system and subs in the trunk and whatever else that they can take inside of the trunk like my tools and friends' wallets and purse.
a bunch on brannan between 2nd and embarcadero too, i parked in the lot on brannan between 2nd and delancey last night, came in the morning and an infinity next to me had it's rear window smashed in and the guys climbing gear was strewn all about the parking lot, and a bunch of stuff left in his car, then the next morning i came out to my car, which I had moved to one of the metered spots on Brannan and Delancey, and it had it's rear window smashed in, and the idiots didn't even take anything, the car was completely empty except for 2 walkie talkies in the passenger side door tray, and those were still in there, along with my GPS in the glovebox, what's the point of these break ins if they aren't looking around or taking anything??
chaser, There was nothing visible in my car, everything was in the glove box or in that little pocket on the door, where you can't see from outside, otherwise the car was empty. which was why it was annoying, as i generally leave my car completely empty when leaving it, so trying my best to not be a car theft victim

Don't be a car break-in victim - never leave anything in your car. The only reason they break-in is because they see stuff in your car.
Ian, they could have been chased away and did not have a chance to grab anything. I have personally chased these people away after hearing a break in.
