The traffic light @ 21 & Garfield is terribly mis-timed. 21 Mile Rd traffic is consistently backed-up at the light in both directions while Garfield traffic moves freely through the light with no (or little) back-up.
The problem is that 21 Mile needed to be widened 15 years ago when the building boom occurred. Now we’re stuck with an inadequate infrastructure that isn't slated to be widened until 2025. Great planning by the road commission and Macomb Twp!
I live on a corner at 21 mile road and I assure you that the road DOESNOT need to be widened. The traffic signal timing needs to be changed so the east/west traffic moves more freely than the north/south at Garfield. North bound Garfield at 21 does have a lot more traffic than the southbound lanes. Also the speed limit in 21 need to be reduced to 35, not 45. From Hayes to Romeo Plank the speed limit is 45 on a two lane road. Directly down from that, on Hall road, whick is an 8 lane road, the limit is the same at 45. But that is another complaint
So you are saying that traffic is backing up but the road does not need to be widened. Also that you want the speed lowered which would create more of a back up. Sounds like you need to move, or should have never bought a house on a MAIN Mile Road.
Actually the speed limit on Hall rd. from Hayes east to 94 is 50 mph not 45. Also Garfield from Hall-22 Mile is a 2 lane road at 50 mph that I live near and have no problems with. Widening makes all roads safer by having a center lane for turning and reducing rear end accidents and creating a way for emergency vehicles to get around traffic.
I live the 21 Mile & Garfield intersection and I must say there has been noticeably more traffic accidents here, especially after a year of trying to implement a new style of traffic light timing. The rotation from yellow-red-green is now varied and not consistent. This new rotation of color seem dependent on time of day, amount of traffic, number of left-hand turns. Most accidents seem to involve the younger people and elderly drivers, in addition the latest accidents seem to be at greater speeds, higher impact that makes for a more violent accident and leading to fatalities.
This intersection (along with a few others in the area) may just be a trial test for the Macomb County Road Commission on the way to implement a new style of traffic light timing and rotation practices,… but please return our signals to the older method which most drivers are very familiar using. In my opinion this seems more an issue of road commission malpractice where a safe condition was made into a very unsafe situation. Some public education is also necessary and would be a great benefit.
These new signals have now been approved as standard state guidelines and are being installed throughout the entire country, so drivers should become familiar with their operation.

The State again has no idea what they are doing. These lights are ridiculous and cause traffic jams and unexpected light changes that make no sense what so ever. I swear every time I am at that light. If this is going to become installed everywhere, they are going to cause numerous accidents and deaths. The Road Commission better look at them again and report to the State that they do not accomodate the flow of traffic and are hazardous to eveyone's driving health. Please, Please really look at their efficiency and make an informed decision regarding them
A driver takes his/her life in their hands making a left hand turn at this intersection!! Turning from Westbound 21 Mile onto Southbound Garfield is a nightmare!! You have to wait for the Eastbound 21 Mile traffic to have a slight opening and then FLOOR it!! The left hand turn light is way too short! I hate driving on this corner!! Get the lights timed appropriately Macomb County!
In order to have our traffic engineers better investigate this, is there a certain time of day these back ups are occurring? We prefer that they conduct onsite checks during the time of the back up. Please provide details on the time of day this problem seems to be worse. Thank you
I agree with Gary. I usually drive this intersection weekdays between 3-5pm. Personally can't comment on any other time of day/night because I totally avoid that area.
No backups were noted this morning, but the traffic engineer adjusted the timing to allow more time for westbound 21 Mile during the pm rush time frame. Hopefully, this will help out.
It is not the west bound side that has the major issue it is the east bound side. I am telling you anytime after 3pm is generally when all the traffic starts. Some days are worse than others but most of the time traffic is backed up to almost Tilch.
Take a look at the Click-Fix-It boards & you'll see that these new "intelligent" lights are causing problems at the intersections they've been installed. I think they are good for low-traffic intersections but I do not think they are working as intended at intersections with higher traffic flow (23 & Schoenherr-22 & Hayes etc). Shelby Police News recently did a story about these lights and the fact that they are seeing an increase in accidents at these intersections. I know the road commission would like to blame it all on driver error but honestly, I think they need to re-assess these lights. One only need to be in traffic at one of these intersections to see that they're not working as intended
The traffic light @ 21 & Garfield needs to be checked as far as timing, Traffic is backed-up daily on 21 mile. Something needs to be done. If an emergency vehicle needs to get thru they will be delayed, time is precious in a life and death situation. Please look into. Intelligent lights! Not!
Fix this light traffic all backed up on 21 Mile Rd. Need to have flashing yellow so traffic can turn southbound on Garfield when Eastbound traffic is clear......
This light needs attention. Why pay for intelligent signals when traffic backs up without any oncoming cars?
For example at 6:30 am each day for the past month
Westbound 21 Mile Road - the left arrow is solid without ANY oncoming eastbound traffic.
Southbound Garfield - light does not sense lack of traffic on 21 Mile Road
If someone from the Road Commission would monitor the flow at this tme it would be easy to ee.
I agree with Devin. Each night during the week 21 mile is usually backed up all the way from Garfield to Hayes and at times past Hayes. This needs to be addressed. What gets me is I thought these new camera lights were suppose to take care of these issues automatically. If they can't do that then why did we waist all that money on a new light system that so far all I can see causes me to stop more at lights. This new light system is nothing but a joke!!

Adjustments were made to east and west bound 21 Mile timing. I hope this has helped the traffic flow.
In the future, please email us at geninfo@rcmcweb.org or call our Traffic Dept at 586.463.8671 regarding any road related issues. Thank you!
