I have a business in the Garden Plaza building at 236 Georgia St. I have been there over 12 years. The loitering is a chronic problem that has gotten much worse in the last coupleyyearswhen the homeless shelter on Sacramento Street closed for repairs and when the VPD started "clearing out" select encamplents at River Park and in/near downtown. Black Talon private security is inadquate, apparently, to keep the area by our front entrance clear of loiterers. We need a better solution. In the meantime, please remove all debris that they leave behind.
Thanks for reporting! Staff are aware of this recurring problem and several departments are working together to try and resolve this issue. Because these items appear to be personal property, by law we are not allowed to discard it. We will send out staff next week to remove anything that does not look like personal property, and also have the Community Services Section (707-553-7218) come out and bag any personal property for pick-up. If you see people in the area, please call the number provided above.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
I am glad to hear the city is not throwing out private property of homeless people. A decade or so ago, when I lived in San Francisco, the city "solved" a homeless encampment near City Hall by coming in with bulldozers, clearing away tents, sleeping bags, all the personal belongings, of course including people's medications. It was horrible.
