  • 100-300 Dover Street New Haven, CT - Chatham Square

We have reported this issue a few times in the last couple of years. Vehicles travel way in excess of the posted speed limit day & night. A couple of times a flashing "SLOW DOWN" sign with the posted speed is placed in the street. It helps temporarily while the sign is there, then traffic speeds up again when the sign is removed.

SPEED BUMPS MUST BE PLACED ON THIS STREET.

We are starting to wonder why the lack of interest from the New Haven Traffic & Parking Dept on this issue. Is somebody "connected" putting the squash on the request for some reason?? Or worse, is it thought by the powers that be that 'they're only renters' and not worth the extra expense of a few yards of blacktop??

SPEED BUMPS have been placed on streets much the same as Dover on "the other side of the tracks" - like Canner St and other streets off Willow.

It is such a NO BRAINER solution to slow down traffic.

PLEASE HELP US OVER HERE IN THE HOOD!! If you read this please click "I want this fixed too", even if you just agree with the SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN and aren't familiar with our particular street.

Maybe some action can be taken this time. Please, Traffic & Parking Department...

  • 100-300 Dover Street. New Haven, CT, New Haven, CT - Chatham Square

Speed limit is 25 mph and it is all but ignored. While it's probably unrealistic to drive 25, the average car probably drives between 45-50 and I have seen over 60 mph many times! I request NHPD monitor the street and issue citations as needed. An unmarked vehicle would be smart as everyone can see a marked Ford Crown Vic from a mile away

I would also like to see SPEED BUMPS (HUMPS) placed in the street as can be seen in the neighborhood of Orange & Willow Sts. I think our children are entitled to live just as the kids in that neighborhood are...

Witnessed a cop in Fair Haven last night seem to ignore a group of 10-15 bikers speeding and doing wheelies right in front of his police cruiser. I was kind of shocked he didn't go after them, so I walked up and asked him what was up with that. He stated that although he would like to, he is unable to pursue anyone unless they have a weapon or have just committed a felony crime. It is the policy of NHPD due to their fear of 'lawsuits' if someone is injured as a result of a vehicle pursuit. Why is New Haven different than other agencies that DO pursue criminals?, I asked. Got no answer except it is the policy NHPD has adopted.

I think this policy creates a lack of respect toward our police and effectively ties their hands behind their back so they cannot do their job.

The city recently spent time cleaning the sidewalk on the north side of Dover St. (along I-91 entrance ramp)but some lowlives threw their junk back there again, no doubt when they were evicted. Or maybe the landlord did it. Who knows. Either way it needs to be removed again.
  • 185 Dover Street (Vacant) New Haven, CT - Chatham Square
Disgusting pigpen bringing down property values. Image is the GOOD side of the place. LCI turns a deaf ear because PRIOR owner had "problems". This person moved. ALL UTILITIES OFF. HOUSE IS VACANT. PROPERTY PURCHASED BY ANOTHER but won't switch name in city records SO THEY DON'T HAVE TO CLEAN IT UP. LCI this is what being nice gets you!! I WANT THIS PLACE CLEANED UP!!!
  • 143-145 Rowe St New Haven, CT - Chatham Square
If it is not this house the diapers are coming from it is the one next door. As you walk the street it is kind of obvious neither one uses garbage bags to keep their trash together. Not only are there dirty diapers, there is just trash in general all over the street from English to Dover on Rowe. The landlord here needs to get fined. These people are PIGS, plain and simple.
  • 143 Rowe St New Haven, CT 06513, USA - Chatham Square
Since approximately mid-summer there has been obvious increased drug activity in the general area on Rowe St between English and Dover Sts. I have witnessed vehicles dropping people off and waiting for them to return several times on Dover St. I have called the police and received return calls from them, but perhaps I was not convincing enough. The actual drug activity seems to be coming approximately mid-block of Rowe St on the east side (this time) between English & Dover Sts. I'm requesting NHPD to monitor this activity as it is clearly becoming a problem.

I propose an enforced city ordinance that mobile garbage recepticles must be placed BEHIND the residence where they belong (or in an enclosure when not out for pickup). Many other cities require this and the reason is obvious. It is for the good of everybody and everbody's property values. Enforcement could be done the same as a parking ticket. We are fortunate the city gives us the garbage cans as, again, in many places they do not. They are not supposed to be used as part of the landscape architecture or decoration for the sidewalk.

There's a huge oak(?) tree in front of my house that has caused the sidewalk to raise 4-8 inches. It's a tripping hazard.
  • 1 500 Front St New Haven, CT 06513, USA - Fair Haven
Thanks NHPD/SIU for pulling over that old white Mustang on Front St about 4-4:30 today. We need like 20 more unmarked cars like that in Fair Haven. Can we try Dover St next? Speeding and unsafe driving by the local "inhabitants" daily. May I suggest whacking them over the head with your nightstick first and asking questions later though?
  • 1 300 Dover St New Haven, CT 06513, USA - Chatham Square
Constant speeding and loud vehicles from approx 12 noon until late. Have created issue before on the speeding but nothing is happening. They put a movable sign on the street for a couple of weeks but really didn't do much. Once again: The speeding creates a dangerous situation. The police seem totally passive about enforcing traffic laws on this street. I also want noise ordinances enforced for loud exhaust and music. Rediculous. This place is like a free-for-all. Hey, everybody's welcome in New Haven, do whatever the hell you want and nobody's gonna bother you!
  • 194 Dover St New Haven, CT 06513, USA - Chatham Square
Tonight, four black males hanging out on front porch making lots of noise. Called police, no response. Have heard people there a couple of times late at night last couple of weeks. To dark to see anybody.
  • 1 600 Ferry St New Haven, CT 06513, USA - Chatham Square

Instead of JUST complaining about issues here, I thought it would be helpful to state an idea for a SOLUTION to area problems. Today I made some reply comments to the "prostitution on Ferry St" issue and somebody chose to flag them. For what I don't know yet. Maybe that person can explain the ball-less act here instead of just arbitrarily consoring next time because they don't agree:

New Haven/Fair Haven is the kind of place it is today, in part, due to 70-years of catering SOLELY to low-income residents. I would like to see some focusing in a different direction by city planners in order to bring the community up. There are steps that have to be taken to this end. I'm not a real estate expert and just beyond marketing Fair Haven to the target audience I wouldn't know how to accomplish it. I don't say this to exclude anybody - I don't care if those that move in are from Mars, we just need an influx of dollars (not just the government's either). Following is a definition of where it is, we, as a community, should go:

Gentrification and urban gentrification denote the socio-cultural changes in an area resulting from wealthier people buying housing property in a less prosperous community. Consequent to gentrification, the average income increases and average family size decreases in the community, which may result in the informal economic eviction of the lower-income residents, because of increased rents, house prices, and property taxes. This type of population change reduces industrial land use when it is redeveloped for commerce and housing. In addition, new businesses, catering to a more affluent base of consumers, tend to move into formerly blighted areas, further increasing the appeal to more affluent migrants and decreasing the accessibility to less wealthy natives.

Nor do they contribute to "curb appeal" in any way. I used the above addresses because this format requires it. While I got a hit within those addresses, in reality the offenders are up and down the whole street. Is there not some type of regulation against this practice? Can the city send them a notice to put the stupid things BEHIND the house where they belong?? I realize there are more pressing issues than silly low property values and the perception this is a "crummy" neighborhood. Maybe we can start with the little things.

A speed limit sign with wheels and flashing display was placed on the street Monday, 5/17. Whoever is responsible, thanks, but it hasn't done anything to alleviate the problem. The real problem are SPECIFIC PEOPLE that not only speed but do burnouts whenever possible and generally drive wrecklessly. I believe the police terminology would be "wreckless driving", "unsafe start" and "display of speed". I have written a letter to Lt. Casanova, manager of the Fair Haven substation, suggesting unmarked police vehicle patrol, to no avail. Perhaps no action is taken because NHPD does not want to become entwined in alien status issues which undoubtedly would surface as a result of traffic enforcement. I don't know. My only intention is to make my street safe, period. Unless that flashing sign is placed in the middle of the street (unlikely) or STOP SIGNS at e/b and w/b on Dover @ Rowe Sts (probably the best solution) nothing will change.

Motorists drive 50-60 mph on Dover St between Clinton & Ferry - both ways. Somebody's going to get killed.
  • 100 300 Dover St New Haven, CT 06513, USA - Chatham Square
There is a one to two foot gap at the bottom of the barrier wall almost the entire length of Dover St. It allows noise and "fallout" from the vehicles on I-91 (n/b entrance ramp and roadway itself) into the neighborhood. Either needs to be filled in or dense plantings to fill the gap. There is a steep embankment leading up to the barrier wall full of overgrowth and dead trees. Lastly, at the bottom of the embankment, there is trash & debris piled behind some residences. It all needs to be cleaned up.
